The Digital ID project, formerly Kauri ID, was a blockchain-based self-sovereign identity system developed to enable secure and decentralised identity management in New Zealand.
Kauri ID is a self-sovereign, blockchain-based digital identity platform developed to empower users with full control over their personal data. The goal was to eliminate centralised identity verification dependencies, providing a secure, decentralised , and user-managed identity system . This initiative was part of a cross-industry collaboration involving over 15 companies in New Zealand to enable seamless and secure digital identity verification across sectors.
Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI): Users own and control their identity without relying on centralised authorities.
Blockchain-Backed Trust: Utilised Ethereum and Hyperledger Fabric to ensure tamper-proof identity records.
Privacy by Design: Built-in cryptographic mechanisms to enable selective disclosure and ensure privacy.
Multi-Party Collaboration: Worked with public and private sector entities to ensure interoperability and regulatory alignment.
Decentralised Storage: Integrated IPFS (InterPlanetary File System) for secure, distributed data storage.
Real-Time Verification: Enabled live identity verification without the need for manual KYC processes.
Blockchain Platforms: Ethereum (Solidity), Hyperledger Fabric
Programming Languages: JavaScript, Python
Smart Contracts: Solidity-based identity logic and verification mechanisms
Storage: IPFS for decentralised file storage
Front-End: ReactJS for dashboard and identity portal
Back-End: Node.js for API integration and smart contract interaction
Security: CryptoJS for encryption and secure data handling
Minimalist UX: Designed a simple, intuitive interface allowing users to manage credentials and share only what’s necessary.
Decentralised Workflow: Emphasised user autonomy through decentralised onboarding, verification, and credential issuance.
Extensibility: Built with modular architecture to support future integrations with government and enterprise services.
Cross-Platform Demonstration: Showcased via live demo here and detailed presentation.
